Raymond Cabernet Sauvignon -2006 (WE-131112)

Very rich and ripe. Earns its high score for the interesting, complex presentation, like a high-production play, with classic blackberry, cassis and new oak flavors, wrapped into refined tannins. Dramatic and impressive, but not an ager, so drink up. 1 Note

Absolutely opaque—it’s definitely one of the darkest, inkiest wines out there. The black-currant nose shows lots of depth, with vanilla and cinnamon shadings. Though it is massive and a bit unpenetrable now, the softness, blackberry fruit and full tannins suggest it will be really nice in a few years. Just expect a real fruit ball. 1 Note

Raymond Cabernet Sauvignon -1999 (WE-34992)

One of the final releases of the 99 vintage, this wine is just beginning to show its age. It’s quite soft and delicate, although there remains a scour of tough tannin. The flavors were once of blackberries but they’re starting to break up into dried herbs and coffee. An interesting wine at an awkward age that will appeal to connoisseurs. 1 Note

This is not one of your big, opulent Napa Cabs. The decision seems to have been made to rein it in, keep it drier and tarter and, in theory, more elegant and ageworthy. It does boast good cherry and cassis fruit and oak, and is thoroughly dry. 1 Note

I can see the intention here, to create a statement, 100% Cab that defines Raymond’s historic approach. The grapes got immensely ripe in chocolate and blackberry pie filling flavors, while 100% new French oak adds vanilla and char. But the wine is too soft, almost flat, which accentuates the fruity sweetness and makes the finish sugary. 1 Note

Raymond returns to form with this 100% Cabernet. It’s made in the modern cult style, which emphasizes immediate pleasure at the expense of ageability. With rich cherry, cassis and new oak flavors, the wine is soft enough to open now, and should drink well for the next six years. 1 Note

A bright textured Cabernet, loaded with blackberry, licorice, black cherry, tar, herb and smoky toast flavors. Tannins are a bit powdery, but fine nonetheless, with a long, clean finish. 1 Note

If you like oak, you’ll love this wine. The opening smell is of smoky, charred wood, caramel and toast. In the mouth, sweet oak and spicy wood-sap dominate. If the fruit were strong enough to carry all these barrels, fine, but it’s not. Seems like the vintage was light and the winemaker strove to compensate with wood. 1 Note

Raymond Cabernet Sauvignon -2005 (WE-96184)

There’s a good wine in here, but it may take a while to emerge. Or maybe not. Right now, this 100% Cab is dominated by spicy, sappy oak that obscures the underlying fruit. On closer inspection, the wine is flooded with black currants and mulberries, and is quite tannic. Could well age, but that excessive oakiness is a problem. 1 Note

A gorgeous Cabernet, sweetly soft and generous, offering delicious flavors. With an overlay of smoky, vanilla-scented oak, it has a core of blackberries, cherries, cassis and spices. Feels vital and flashy. Drink over the next four years. 1 Note
