Spring Mountain Vineyard Syrah -1999 (WE-22438)

Pours dark as a graveyard, and one whiff tells you it’s lavishly oaked in fine, charred barrels. You have to taste it to find what the vineyard brings, namely, black cherry fruit. Then those mountain tannins kick in, and wham! Everything stops. An obvious cellar candidate through 2006, when you try again. 1 Note

Spring Mountain Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc -2003 (WE-43866)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Heavily toasted, with buttery aromas of peach, lemon and pineapple. Very sweet on the palate, with honey, caramel, coconut and baked-apple flavors. What may be too sweet and sickly for some could trigger happiness for others. Not a unanimous choice among our panel. 1 Note

This fascinating wine is bone dry and tart in acids, with citrus, melon, fig and gooseberry flavors that finish with a rich spiciness. Be careful not to chill it too much. You might even want to decant it for a while before refrigerating. It gets better as it breathes in the glass. 1 Note

Drinks off-dry and simple, with ripe flavors of lemon custard. The acids are clean and vibrant, but the sweetness is jarring. So is the price. 1 Note

This bottling definitely needs a warmer vintage to fully ripen, because this ’05 is aggressive in cat pee aromas. Everything else in the wine is good. 1 Note
