A blend of 61% Merlot and 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, this medium-bodied red comes across as a bit firm and earthy. It sure smells fine, combining tobacco, earth, red currants and vanilla, but doesn’t seem to have the richness of fruit to stand up to the structure in the long run. Drink now, with rare beef or lamb. 1 Note

Te Awa’s 2007 Syrah is a ripe, chunky example, with chocolate and plum notes leading the way, followed at some distance by hints of baking spices. It’s firm and slightly dusty on the finish, yet mouthwatering at the same time. 1 Note

The 2006 Boundary is a full-bodied, concentrated Bordeaux-style blend, with plenty of cassis and vanilla apparent on the nose. There’s a slight baked fruit component to the wine, and supple, slightly dusty-textured tannins on the finish. Drink it over the next 5–6 years. 1 Note

Showing plenty of toasty oak, Te Awa’s 2007 Chardonnay is at the same time surprisingly medium-bodied, with refined citrusy aromas and flavors at its core, cosseted by layers of vanilla and coconut. Try it with scallops or lobster, and let the long, citrusy finish play off the buttery sweetness of the shellfish. Drink now–2012. 1 Note

Te Awa’s Bordeaux-style red is a blend of 68% Merlot and 16% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Dried herb, plum and mocha notes give an almost St.-Emilion flavor to the wine, but the fruit is definitively New World in style. Supple and creamy enough to drink now, but should also hold a few years. 1 Note

For all of this wine’s 14.5% alcohol, it’s not that rich, instead presenting a medium-bodied, elegant palate feel. Hints of violets and cracked pepper are attractive on the nose, easily marrying with the wine’s flavors of black olive, meat, sour plum and slightly pruny notes. Tasted twice, with consistent results. 1 Note

This wine’s supple, silky mouthfeel is a treat, as is the impressively long finish, so if you can tolerate some pretty herbal Cabernet aromas and flavors, give this a shot. There’s plenty of chocolate and cassis, but also a distracting bell pepper nuance. Ready to drink, although it should also hold well for at least the next few years. 1 Note
