A Wine

Telmo Rodríguez Moscatel -2005 (WE-89227)

Somewhat disappointing compared to prior years. This vintage, despite its sky-high price, is good enough. But when push comes to shove it just isn’t that satisfying. The nose is cheesy and heavy, with more cured meat and hot dog aromas than fruit. And the palate is syrupy and sort of flat, with canned papaya and finishing flavors of mustard and anise seed. 1 Note

Telmo Rodríguez Tinta de Toro -2005 (WE-82926)

There’s no shortage of ripeness in this single-vineyard, somewhat hot and wild Toro. The nose is all spice, heat and simmering black fruit, and that’s backed by a brooding, heaviy concentrated palate. Teetering on the precipice of overripe, this wine needs all the air and patience you can give it to muster elegance to match its power. 1 Note

Right away this shows the requisite signs of excellence. The meaty, earthy, leathery, full-fruit nose is just right, and the palate is elevated in how it is infused with pure blackberry and plum as well as chocolate and fine herbs. Finishes with class and kick. Best from 2008–2011. 1 Note

Smooth, smoky and leathery is how this winner gets going, and backing that up is a palate of laser-beam intensity. This offers nothing less than an explosion of plum and cherry flavors, but the style is clean and fresh, not heavy or overoaked. Already it shows nice evolution, as it comes across drinkable. Ethereal in how the finish just slips away. Only 375 cases produced. 1 Note

Masculine and heady stuff, as leather, espresso, smoked meat, mocha and intense blackberry aromas set the stage for an intense, driven, structured palate that’s full of coconut, vanilla bean, cocoa and pure plum and berry. A serious nuevo classico Rioja if there ever was one. 1 Note

The price on this high-flying Rioja continues to go through the roof, and so does the oak and tannin. And while we still appreciate the wine’s intensity and power, this vintage pushes so much espresso, burnt nut and rubber that it probably won’t impress all comers. In the mouth, look for dark, almost bitter black-fruit flavors followed by a firm, tannic finish. Needs time in the cellar to find more integration. Hold for another year before checking on its status. 1 Note

With Matallana, you must pay for your pleasure. But pleasurable it is. The nose is a splendid blend of licorice, baking spices, cassis and black plum. The approach is neither quiet nor loud, but well-spoken. It pumps forth huge black cherry and plum fruit, but offsets any raw size with tobacco, herb, coffee and other subtleties. A touch hard now but should soften with a couple of years aging. Best from 2010–2013. 1 Note
