Testarossa Chardonnay -2005 (WE-67308)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This was a cool vintage, and while it had long hangtime, the grapes from this northwestern vineyard, in the coolest part of the appellation, struggled to ripen. The wine has high acidity and a minerally tang to the citrus, apples and kiwis. Toasty oak softens and enriches. Should gain bottle complexity over the next six years. 1 Note

This is the ripest and fruitiest of the winery’s current Chards, and a decadent one, with rich pineapple custard flavors. Oak adds vanilla, meringue and woodspice notes. Rich, fat, flashy and flamboyant, this is a distinctly New World Chardonnay. 1 Note

Testarossa Chardonnay -2007 (WE-93898)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

This Chardonnay is very fine, with a coat of smoky oak framing ripe flavors of apricots, oranges, fudgy vanilla custard and cinnamon spices. Balancing acidity is bright and keen. The wine should benefit from some time in the cellar, if you can keep your hands off it. 1 Note

Grown in a famous cool-climate vineyard, this Chardonnay is vastly rich in grilled pineapple, orange cream, apricot jam, mineral and vanilla honey flavors that taste like they have a touch of botrytis. It will slowly evolve over the next six years. 1 Note

Here’s an oaky, lemony wine with the acidity and stuffing for aging. Begins with citrus, cream and smoke aromas, and turns searingly rich, with lemon mousse and smoky honey flavors that last through the long, spicy finish. 1 Note

The fruit isn’t superrich, but what’s so likeable about this wine is its Chablis-like mineral intensity, although it’s also well-oaked. Under the wet stone and flint is a polished layer of white peach. 1 Note

Forward in tropical pineapple and lime pie flavors, and well-oaked, this Chard has a lush, creamy texture. What gives pause is the very high acidity leading to a tart finish. Strong enough to cut through lobster, but has the firmness of structure to develop over the next five years. 1 Note

Not surprisingly, this is similar to the Chards from this vineyard from Rob Talbott, which develop for a long time in the bottle. The wine is bone dry and very high in acidity, with a stony minerality to the peach and pineapple flavors. It’s really too young now, but should begin to be ready by 2007. 1 Note

This is the most citrusy of Testarossa’s ’07 Chards, brimming with Meyer lemon, lime and pineapple flavors. Smooth, smoky oak and lees add complex layers of butter, cream and tart yeastiness. Brilliant but immature, the wine should come into its own after 2009. 1 Note

Testarossa’s 2007 Chardonnays are out, and this La Cruz is right up there with the best of them. Rich in citrusy acids, it dazzles the palate with Mandarin orange, pineapple-infused crème brûlée, mineral, buttered toast and cinnamon spice flavors. Drink this decadent wine soon. 1 Note
