Ventisquero Cabernet Sauvignon -2003 (WE-54815)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Ventisquero’s top bottlings feature gray labels, hence the name. The Cabernet features some minty-eucalyptus scents alongside standard cassis and plum aromas. A bit fuller than the other wines in the range, and also more structured, ending with firm tannins and mouthwatering acids. 1 Note

Ventisquero Carmenère -2003 (WE-54791)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Ventisquero’s top Camenère avoids the green qualities that can sometimes plague this variety. Instead, it’s soft and lush, marrying plum and dark chocolate flavors in a seamless package. Contains 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Syrah, so not a pure expression of Carmenère, but a very good one. 1 Note

Ventisquero Cabernet Sauvignon -2006 (WE-91308)

Something about this wine always triggers the same response: we’ve rated 88 points for several vintages running. This version smells a touch reduced and rubbery, with a jammy, granular bouquet. The palate is big yet a touch mushy, with intense berry and chocolate flavors. Finishes sweet, with mocha and coffee. 1 Note

Ventisquero Carmenère -2006 (WE-91309)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Quite saucy and spicy upon first blush, with a heavy bouquet. Here’s a wine that holds nothing back; it is compact, tight and hard on the palate, but it tastes meaty, big and generous, with plum and chocolate flavors. Finishes with heat, rusticity and peppery power. A brawny wine that shoots high but doesn’t hit every target. 1 Note

Ventisquero Shiraz -2006 (WE-91310)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A big wine with a nose defined by crushed coal and perfumed black fruit. The palate is plush and ripe, but also lively and pleasant. Tastewise, this is generous and defined by good berry, chocolate and herb flavors. Finishes with carob and cinnamon. Laudable New World Syrah, a k a Shiraz. 1 Note

Ventisquero Merlot -2006 (WE-91311)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Campfire smoke, charcoal, cola and berry aromas are handsome and convincing. This is one stacked and packed New World Merlot. It oozes baked berry, plum, spice and cinnamon flavors, and then backs that up with toasty coffee and chocolate finishing notes. A stylish wine that’s complex, dark and complete. 1 Note

Ventisquero Cabernet Sauvignon -2003 (WE-69851)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Smoke, mint, cassis and blackberry all show themselves on the nose of this solid wine. It’s a good representation of the variety, despite having 15% Syrah blended in, marked by a touch of herb and also some noteworthy structure. Starts out thick and lush, then firms up on the finish, suggesting a positive evolution through at least 2012. 1 Note

Ventisquero Carmenère -2004 (WE-69849)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Shows plenty of leafy character on the nose, although our reviewers disagreed over whether it was overly green. Flavors are deeply chocolaty and plum-like, with a round mouthfeel and creamy tannins. Soft and plush on the finish, with a balanced blend of spice and fruit. Drink now–2012. 1 Note

Ventisquero Red Blend -2005 (WE-85348)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

For a wine with high-end designs, this has a few issues, namely a pinched, leathery bouquet and then an herbal essence to both the palate and finish. But seeing that it’s 55% Carmenère and 45% Syrah, that makes sense. What’s best about Vertice is the solid mouthfeel and the way it avoids being jammy or overly sweet and candied. 1 Note

Ventisquero Syrah -2005 (WE-85349)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A little soft, with inconsistent early aromas giving way to roasted plum and black-fruit flavors. The more time you give it the better it gets, but at $55 this Syrah falls squarely into the category of underwhelming. It’s rich and has satisfying sweet-fruit flavors, but it doesn’t have much structure nor does it register as the top-shelf red that it’s price tag suggests. 1 Note
