Big, jammy blackberry and plum fruit that you find on the nose and palate turns a little taut–like cranberry–on the finish. Still, a very good wine with forward, enjoyable fruit. 1 Note

Even tasted blind, this excellent Cab's smooth, velvety-clay feel says "Coonawarra." It's a restrained, balanced wine with pencil eraser and red plum fruit flavors, and cherry brightening the finish; even still, it's the texture you'll remember. 1 Note

With its soft tannins, this is a drink-me-now style of Shiraz, but one that shows a little extra depth and complexity. Floral notes perk up the aromas while cherries and berries flavor the palate, turning a bit crisp on the finish. Drink now–2011. 1 Note

Shows distinctive Barossa style, with a touch of alcoholic warmth to the superripe blackberry liqueur flavors. Ample oak imparts toast, vanilla, mint and chocolate complexity. It’s a big, full-bodied wine, but because of its ripeness is approachable now. 1 Note

Tasty, sexy, well built and smooth. Not at all fat or flabby, the wine smells like mint and sweet fruit, but is, perhaps, a little nutty. Flavors are of beef, plum and ripe raspberry, with little chips of coconut and toffee candy bar. 1 Note

The nose shows creamy vanilla aromas, plus some earthy, stemmy ones. Lifted berry fruit flavors are countered by smooth tannins on the palate. Has fine treble, but is missing bass notes that would give it more depth. Imported by Foster’s Wine Estates Americas. 1 Note

This is a big, dense, dark-fruited wine, but also one that is surprisingly tart. Cedary, meaty and minty notes lead the way on the nose, while the flavors are of coffee, mint, cedar and cassis. Tannins are drying on the finish, so serve with rare beef or lamb to help tame them. 1 Note

The fruit on the palate is the very picture of plum. The wine’s not lean, nor is it sweet—it’s a solid, medium- to full-bodied Cabernet that doesn’t try to bowl you over with oak or caramel or, well, anything. It’s balanced and well behaved, with aromas that run the gamut from blackberry and plum to mocha to cherry to caramel. Very nice. 1 Note

The Real McCoy, from the standpoint of a massive, New World Cabernet. It’s hard to tell which aroma prevails, the ultraripe cassis scent of grapes or massive oak. Ditto on the palate. Gigantic, huge mouthfeel, an Incredible Hulk of a wine, yet it’s balanced. Too rich to drink now. Best to cellar for a decade and let it develop subtlety. 1 Note

Wolf Blass’s top-level blended wine, this is 51% Cabernet and 49% Shiraz with straight-shooting cassis and black plum fruit on the palate. Finishes with flair-with chocolate, liqueur and coffee, like a savory after-dinner drink. 1 Note
