Wine Beer Of the Week
Excuse us please, while we honor a legend.

Today is a big one in rock-'n'-roll history: On this day in 1969 guitar genius Jimi Hendrix electrified the final day at Woodstock. While there are plenty of wineries near Woodstock, N.Y., today, somehow we just feel as though we should skip the wine and drink something a little more appropriate to the day's importance. Gain experience, if you will.

After work today, we're popping the caps off a few bottles of Purple Haze by Louisiana brewery Abita. As much as we love wine and advocate its consumption every day, drinking a beer or two in honor of the greatest-ever guitar player's unforgettable performance 41 years ago is perfectly acceptable. Moreover, Purple Haze can be considered a wine drinker's beer.

As a wheat beer it's a little lighter and more refreshing than your average brew. And with raspberries added to the process, Purple Haze has a light, sweet fruit flavor that's not far off from what you find in the brighter red wines such as Gamay and Pinot Noir. You can locate it here.

Want to go all out in honor of Hendrix today? You could even pair this beer with Purple Haze goat cheese. (Just skip the LSD.) If you have a fond memory of drinking wine while listening to Hendrix or another Woodstock icon, share it with us below. Just get in the mood first by cranking up the Electric Ladyland.

I live inMississippi and have visited the Abita brewery. I highly recommend it if your down that way. Lots of fun. Although I am a wine drinker I do enjoy Purple Haze. It's one of my favorite beers! I have a quote from Jimmy Hendrix on my outgoing emails: "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace". You tell 'em Jimmy...
