How to remove holiday party wine stains

imagesWhat do your favorite sweater, tablecloth, and carpet have in common?

They are all potential victims of holiday party wine fouls. At some point in the blur of soirees, you or a guest might spill an over-eagerly swirled red wine on your prized possessions. Team Daily Sip is here to share the most efficient ways to remove those stains.

The Commercial Stuff
Anyone who has used Wine Away ($8.99; 12 ounces) knows its magical properties and yummy citrus scent. It works on fresh and dried stains without the use of bleach or phosphates. Find it online and in many winery tasting rooms.

The Stuff Under The Sink
Rather use something in your cupboard? Try hydrogen peroxide mixed with dishwashing liquid. This combo is university-approved for stain-lifting power. Mix equal parts liquid detergent and hydrogen peroxide. Sponge the mixture over the red wine stain. Let stand for a minute. Blot the area until the stain fades. Wash the garment as usual.

The Stuff in The Spice Cabinet
Salt. We were skeptical, too, until we tried it on a fresh blotch of Bordeaux. Coat the stain with a generous layer of salt, working the salt gently into the fabric. Let sit for a few hours or overnight. Shake off the salt and launder as usual. Not recommended for dry stains.

The Stuff in the Wine Bottle
Counter intuitive? Maybe. But it works. Pour a small amount of white wine over the fresh red wine stain and blot with a clean towel. Launder as usual.

Or, next year, just stick to bubbly.
