Casual Night in with Popcorn and Wine

popcorn_02We feel quite strongly here at The Daily Sip® that wine isn’t just for elegant dinners and fancy affairs. No; we think even everyday food deserves a mouthwatering wine. Nothing is more everyday than popcorn. In honor of Popcorn Lover's Day, huddle up on your couch, pop in a movie, grab a giant bowl of popcorn, and use this list to make your match.

Popcorn purists like their kernels one way and that’s popped, covered in melted butter, then salted. To that we say: butter in the bowl, butter in the bottle. Traditional California chardonnays will work nicely as a pairing. Consider:

CULTIVATE DREAM WALKING Chardonnay 2010 (Sta. Rita Hills, CA) $18
Not only are you drinking a great wine for the price but some of the proceeds from Cultivate wines go to charity.

CHATEAU MONTELENA Chardonnay 2011 (Napa Valley, CA) $50
A bag of popcorn kernels costs just a few bucks and the movie on demand $5 or so. So go big on the wine for a little party in your mouth. All in, it’s cheaper than dinner out and the wine will still be fabulous.

Now, if you want a fancy or sweet-tasting popcorn, check out Harry and David’s caramel and chocolate gourmet Moose Munch blend. Its pairs well with a sweet dessert wine like ice wine. Try:

INNISKILLIN Vidal Icewine 2011 (Niagara, Ontario, Canada) $40 (375ml half bottle)
Sweet on sweet makes a great dessert.
