Malbec Mayhem

Malbec Mayhem

david_wines_glasses_at_the_vines_of_mendoza_400Malbec, the great red grape of Argentina, has been the hottest red varietal around for a decade. (And like so many things Argentine, it keeps amping up its red hot status.) What makes Malbec so awesome? In a word: its texture. Red wines just don’t get more languorous and luxurious. Drinking a good Malbec feels like someone has just wrapped you up in a cashmere blanket.

Because of its softness, plushness, and deep rich fruit, it’s also on our A list as a top red for grilled meats (so stock up for summer). Malbec comes at many price levels—from about $15 on. But for a bigger, more complex experience try one of the malbecs below, which we think are among the best in the entire country.

CATENA ZAPATA “Nicasia” Malbec 2010 (Mendoza, Argentina) $71
TERRAZAS DE LOS ANDES Reserva Malbec 2012 (Mendoza, Argentina) $18
NIETO SENETINER “Cadus” Malbec 2012 (Mendoza, Argentina) $35
