Salute! It’s National Panini Month!

url August is National Panini Month! Who knew? But who wouldn’t welcome the excuse to pull out the sandwich press or skillet and indulge in amazing grilled and toasted sandwiches? Here, then, are a few favorites and the wines to enjoy with them.

Any discussion of grilled sandwiches has to begin with the classic Grilled Cheese— toasty, rich, and gooey. Equally-rich chardonnay is a great match—a crisper style will cut through the fat of the cheese, while a more buttery style will mirror it. A few ideas:

COMPLICATED Chardonnay 2013 (Sonoma County, CA) $18
FREEMARK ABBEY Chardonnay 2012 (Napa Valley, CA) $30
FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA Chardonnay “Director’s Cut” 2012 (Russian River Valley, Sonoma County, CA) $21

For a lighter, Italian-esque grilled cheese, like this Caprese-Style with mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil, go for a lighter white. Extra points if it’s Italian!

COPPO LA ROCCA Gavi 2012 (Gavi, Italy) $17
THE SEEKER Pinot Grigio 2012 (Veneto, Italy) $12

Adding a little meat to your panini? Any of the wines above would work with a Chicken Pesto Panini, a Turkey and Brie Panini, or a Cuban-Style Sandwich. But they’d also play nicely with dry rosé. For example:

DR. KONSTANTIN FRANK Pinot Noir Dry Rosé 2013 (Finger Lakes, NY) $13
CHATEAU D'AQUERIA Tavel Rosé 2013 (Rhone, France) $19
ARTAZURI Garnacha Rosé 2013 (Navarra, Spain) $12

For even meatier panini, like an Italian Sub-Style or a Muffuletta Panini, go for rosé or one of these lighter reds:

FANCY PANTS Red Wine 2011 (California) $11
MONTEVINA Barbera 2012 (Amador County, CA) $10
FRIENDS Red Wine 2012 (Sonoma County, CA) $12
